Tehran, Iran – In a historic move, Iran and Saudi Arabia reached a landmark peace agreement on December 4, 2024, ending years of hostility and diplomatic standoff between the two regional powers. The agreement, brokered by Iraq and Oman, comes after several rounds of secret negotiations and marks a major shift in Middle Eastern geopolitics.

Under the terms of the accord, both countries agreed to restore full diplomatic ties, exchange ambassadors, and significantly reduce military engagement in regional conflicts. The deal also includes joint initiatives to combat terrorism, address sectarian violence, and promote economic cooperation. The accord is seen as a direct challenge to the influence of the United States and other Western powers in the region.

The peace deal has been welcomed by many, especially in the Gulf region, where Saudi Arabia and Iran have been engaged in proxy wars for decades, including in Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon. The truce is expected to help stabilize these conflict zones, especially in Yemen, where Saudi-backed forces and Houthi rebels have been locked in a brutal civil war for nearly a decade.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) have both publicly committed to the peace process, although there are concerns from various factions within both countries. Hardliners in Iran have expressed skepticism about engaging with Saudi Arabia, while Saudi critics argue that the kingdom is conceding too much to Tehran.

While the deal has raised hopes for broader regional peace, many remain cautious. The UAE, Bahrain, and Israel—countries that have historically aligned with Saudi Arabia—have yet to fully endorse the agreement. Experts say the road to full normalization will be fraught with challenges, including sectarian divides and the delicate balance of power in the region.
